Motorola Defy+ Review

The Motorola DEFY+ is an evolution of the original Motorola DEFY, which won our heart last year as the only complete smartphone that offers some form of physical protection against water, dust and the occasional drop. In a form that doesn’t make it differ much from a typical smartphone.
The handset has a tank like nature that gives the impression it will cope with a battering that could break other handsets. Motorola says the Defy+ is water and scratch resistant as well as dustproof. The display is made from the durable Gorilla Glass, which is proving a popular choice for handset manufacturers. The headphone socket and microUSB ports have plastic covers and the rear cover seals tightly to lock out liquids and dirt. Strangely the rear seal includes the battery compartment but doesn't extend to where the camera is.
We found the design to work well and the ports have more protection from debris, especially compared to other handsets we have in the office. We even ran the phone under a tap and it survived fine. Dirt is often the cause of electronic failures so these features should increase the phone's life span.
Below the screen are four standard Android buttons. On the top of the DEFY+ you wll find the small power button and 3.5mm headphone jack, protected by a flap. A microUSB port, also protected by a flap, can be found on the left side, while the volume rocker resides on the right port. Behind the battery door sits a rather large 1700mAh battery. The microSDHC and normal size sim card slot are found below the battery.
The 5 Megapixel camera is the same one found on the DEFY, and despite being initially led to believe it was capable to recording 720p video, this isn’t true. The maximum supported video recording size is 480p and the DEFY+ supports both fast and slow motion video capture. A single LED flash can be found next to it.
The 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display has a middling resolution of 480x854 pixels. Colours are clear but not especially bright or vibrant.
The snapper on the Defy+ is 5 megapixels, which is a step up from the Defy Mini's 3. I didn't have a chance to assess image quality but we'll be sure to get snapping when we receive the Defy+ for a full review.
There's 2GB of internal storage and this can be expanded up to 32GB via the microSD card slot. The 3.5mm headphone jack can also be sealed with a rubber cap when not in use, to keep the elements at bay.
